At a glance :

Saint Mary’s Tower, also known as the Comino Tower, was constructed in 1618 under the rule of the Knights of St. John. The primary purpose of the tower was to guard the strategically important channel between Malta and Gozo, which was frequently targeted by pirates and invading forces. Built from local limestone, the 12-meter-high structure served as a lookout point, enabling the knights to spot approaching enemy ships long before they reached the islands.

Over the years, Saint Mary’s Tower played various roles in Malta’s defense system. During the French occupation in the late 18th century, it was fortified to resist attacks from both land and sea. It also saw use during British rule, notably during World War II when it was repurposed as a radio communications station.

Today, the tower is a well-preserved piece of Maltese history, thanks to restoration efforts by local heritage organizations. It remains an enduring symbol of Malta’s strategic importance in the Mediterranean and is a popular stop for visitors exploring the island of Comino.

Interesting Facts:

  • Saint Mary’s Tower has been featured in several films, including The Count of Monte Cristo (2002), thanks to its dramatic and isolated location.
  • It was part of a network of watchtowers built by the Knights of St. John, which includes similar towers on the Maltese mainland.
  • Comino, where the tower is located, has just a handful of permanent residents and is mostly known for its nature reserve and the famous Blue Lagoon.

Activities:

Visiting Saint Mary’s Tower offers more than just a history lesson. Here’s how you can make the most of your time on Comino:

  • Hiking: The walk to the tower from the ferry port is a scenic one, passing by rugged coastlines, wild Mediterranean plants, and offering views of the turquoise waters around the island.
  • Photography: The tower itself, along with its stunning surroundings, makes for incredible photo opportunities. Whether you’re into landscape or architecture photography, you’ll find plenty to capture here.
  • Tour the Tower: If you visit when the tower is open (typically on weekends), you can go inside and explore the rooms, learn more about its history, and even climb to the rooftop for unbeatable views of Malta and Gozo.

Getting There:

  • By Ferry: Take a regular ferry from Malta (Cirkewwa) or Gozo (Mgarr) to Comino, then walk to the tower.
  • By Sailing Boat: Many tourists opt for sailing boat tours around the islands, which include a stop at Comino and Saint Mary’s Tower.
  • By Yacht: If you’re looking for a more luxurious experience, you can charter a yacht and anchor near Comino, combining your visit to the tower with a swim at the nearby Blue Lagoon.

Nearby Points of Interest & Landmarks:

While Saint Mary’s Tower is the star attraction of Comino, there are a few other spots worth checking out while you’re on the island:

  • Blue Lagoon: Just a short walk or boat ride from the tower, the Blue Lagoon is a stunning stretch of turquoise waters, perfect for swimming and snorkeling.
  • Santa Marija Chapel: This tiny 16th-century chapel is a peaceful and historical stop, reflecting the simple religious life of Comino’s past residents.
  • Cominotto Island: A small, uninhabited islet across from Comino, great for exploring by boat or swimming if you’re feeling adventurous!
  • Comino Beach, located on the small island of Comino, is famous for its crystal-clear turquoise waters and soft, white sands. Nestled near the iconic Blue Lagoon, it’s a paradise for swimming, snorkeling.

Recap

Saint Mary’s Tower is more than just a historical landmark, it’s a peaceful retreat into Malta’s past, surrounded by the natural beauty of Comino. Whether you’re coming for the history, the views, or simply to escape the crowds, a trip to the tower is sure to be a highlight of your visit to Malta.
