2. History

The origins of Castello di Roccascalegna date back to the 11th century, though much of its current form was built in the 16th century. Initially constructed as a watchtower by the Lombards, the castle was part of a defense network designed to protect against Byzantine invasions. Over the centuries, it grew into a full-fledged fortress, complete with imposing towers and stone walls.

One of the castle’s most infamous stories revolves around Baron Corvo de Corvis, a cruel 17th-century lord known for enforcing the ius primae noctis—a medieval law that allegedly allowed lords to claim the first night with any newlywed bride in his domain. According to legend, the Baron’s reign of terror ended when a brave husband took matters into his own hands and killed him. The Baron is said to have left a bloody handprint on the castle wall, which, according to local lore, reappears even after it is cleaned.

Over time, the castle was abandoned and fell into ruin, only to be restored in the late 20th century. Today, it stands as a symbol of the region’s tumultuous past, as well as a scenic spot that attracts tourists from all over.

3. Interesting Facts

  • The castle is nicknamed the “Eagle’s Nest” because of its striking position on the edge of a cliff.
  • The legend of the bloody handprint is one of the most enduring ghost stories in southern Italy.
  • Some of the castle’s original defensive structures, like its towers and dungeon, are still intact and can be explored today.
  • The castle has served as a filming location for several movies and TV shows due to its picturesque and dramatic setting.

4. Activities

  • Castle tours: Wander through the fortress, exploring its towers, dungeons, and panoramic viewpoints. Guided tours are available if you want a deeper dive into its history.
  • Photography: Thanks to its incredible position on the cliff, the castle offers unbeatable photo opportunities, especially at sunset.
  • Local festivals: If you’re lucky, you might catch one of the local medieval festivals held here, with period costumes, reenactments, and local food.

5. Getting There

  • By car: The easiest way to reach the castle is by car. From Pescara, it’s about a 1.5-hour drive through scenic Abruzzo countryside.
  • By train: You can take a train to the nearby town of Lanciano and then hire a taxi or rent a car for the remaining 30-minute journey.
  • By bus: Buses from Chieti or Lanciano may also take you close to Roccascalegna, but public transport can be limited, so check schedules ahead of time.

6. Final Thoughts

Castello di Roccascalegna is more than just a historical site—it’s a place where legends come alive, and the views are as captivating as the stories. Whether you’re a history buff, a fan of ghost tales, or simply looking to explore off-the-beaten-path Italy, this castle should be on your must-visit list!
