History: The Rise of Rajgad

Rajgad Fort, meaning “Royal Fort,” was originally called Murumbdev and has been around since the 12th century, though it rose to prominence in the 17th century during the Maratha Empire. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj made Rajgad his capital for 25 years, from 1648 until 1674. During this time, the fort became not only a military stronghold but also a symbol of the Maratha resistance against the Mughal Empire. Rajgad played a significant role in many battles and strategic decisions made by Shivaji Maharaj, and it was here that he laid the foundations of an empire that would challenge the Mughals.

The fort was also home to Shivaji’s family, and he famously held court here, using Rajgad as his seat of power. He expanded and fortified the structure to accommodate his needs, adding water tanks, palaces, and strong defensive walls. It’s a place steeped in stories of valor, strategy, and royal legacy. Today, exploring Rajgad feels like stepping back into an era where every stone echoes with tales of battles, royal gatherings, and political intrigue.

Interesting Facts about Rajgad Fort

  2. Architectural Marvel: The fort’s architecture includes massive gates, ramparts, and bastions that have withstood centuries of monsoon rains and battles.
  3. The ‘Suvela Machi’: One of the most famous parts of Rajgad, Suvela Machi is a cliff that offers a panoramic view of the surrounding valley and is a favorite among trekkers.
  4. The Balekilla (Upper Fort): At the highest point of Rajgad, Balekilla was the main fortification and the strategic vantage point used by Shivaji.
  5. The Samadhi of Shivaji’s Queen, Saibai: Within the fort is the final resting place of Saibai Nimbalkar, Shivaji’s first wife, adding an emotional connection to the fort.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Recommendations
