History

Jewel Changi Airport officially opened its doors in April 2019, but the idea behind it had been in the works for nearly a decade. Designed by world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie, the vision was to create a multi-dimensional space that would not only enhance the airport experience but also become a global attraction. It was a bold project that turned the concept of a traditional airport into something much more.

The development of Jewel Changi was part of a broader plan to keep Singapore Changi Airport at the forefront of international air travel. Already known as one of the world’s best airports, Changi wanted to offer something truly unique—a destination where travelers and locals alike could gather, relax, shop, and be entertained. With a focus on sustainability, Jewel Changi incorporates a variety of eco-friendly features, including extensive greenery and a state-of-the-art rainwater collection system for the Rain Vortex.

The construction took over five years to complete and cost approximately SGD 1.7 billion. Since its opening, Jewel has quickly become one of Singapore’s most popular attractions, drawing millions of visitors each year.

Interesting Facts

  • Jewel Changi houses the Rain Vortex, the tallest indoor waterfall in the world, standing at 40 meters high.
  • The entire complex spans 10 stories—five above ground and five below—covering a whopping 137,000 square meters.
  • Jewel is home to over 2,000 trees and plants, making it one of the largest indoor gardens in the world.
  • The building’s distinctive toroidal (doughnut-shaped) glass and steel structure was designed to maximize natural light and create an open, airy environment.
  • Over 300 retail and dining outlets are spread across the complex, making it a shopping and food lover’s paradise.

Attractions

A. The Rain Vortex

The Rain Vortex is undoubtedly the crown jewel of Jewel Changi. At 40 meters tall, it cascades down the center of the building and is surrounded by lush greenery, creating a breathtaking visual experience. By night, the waterfall turns into a spectacular light and sound show, mesmerizing visitors with its beauty. It’s the perfect spot to take a break, snap some photos, or just marvel at the incredible fusion of nature and technology.

For a touch of nature, head to the Shiseido Forest Valley. This massive indoor garden spans several floors and features over 900 trees and palms, along with thousands of shrubs and flowering plants. It’s a peaceful place to stroll or relax after a long flight, with meandering pathways that offer stunning views of the Rain Vortex from different angles.

C. Canopy Park

Located at the top level of Jewel, the Canopy Park is a fun-filled area perfect for families and adventure seekers. The park features a variety of attractions, including the Canopy Bridge, which offers dizzying views of the Rain Vortex below, and the Sky Nets, where you can bounce or walk over suspended nets high above the ground. There’s also a hedge maze, mirror maze, and several art installations to explore.
