This former industrial village offers visitors a unique glimpse into the past, complete with restored buildings, interactive exhibits, and the picturesque Ouiatchouan Falls. Whether you’re a history buff, an adventurer, or simply seeking a serene getaway, Val-Jalbert promises an unforgettable experience.

History

Val-Jalbert was established in 1901 as a company town built around a pulp mill. Its strategic location near Ouiatchouan Falls, which provided hydroelectric power, turned it into a bustling hub of activity. The village thrived until 1927, when the mill closed, leaving the town abandoned.

For decades, nature began to reclaim the area, giving it a ghostly yet enchanting allure. In the 1960s, efforts began to preserve Val-Jalbert as a historical site. Today, it’s a window into Quebec’s industrial past, complete with fully restored homes, a general store, and even the original convent-school.

Walking through its streets, you can almost hear the whispers of mill workers and the laughter of families who once called this village home.

Interesting Facts, Key Points, and Myths

  • Ouiatchouan Falls: At 72 meters (236 feet), these falls are taller than Niagara Falls! They’re the centerpiece of the village, offering spectacular views.
  • Authentic Reconstruction: Over 40 buildings have been restored, maintaining their original architectural style.
  • Interactive History: Guides dressed in period costumes bring the village to life with engaging stories and re-enactments.
  • Myths and Legends: Locals speak of ghostly sightings, from shadowy mill workers to a woman in a flowing dress near the falls.
  • UNESCO Recognition: Val-Jalbert is part of the Saguenay Fjord Biosphere Reserve, recognized for its cultural and natural significance.
  • Cinema 360°: The village features a unique 360-degree multimedia experience that recounts its history in an immersive way.
