Perched on a lush, green hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the Historic Centre of the Town of Olinda is one of Brazil’s most charming and culturally rich destinations. Known for its colorful colonial architecture, vibrant art scene, and lively Carnival celebrations, Olinda’s old town has earned a well-deserved place on UNESCO’s list of World Heritage Sites. Whether you’re a history lover, an architecture enthusiast, or simply looking for a picturesque getaway, Olinda offers something truly unique.

Highlights of Olinda

  • Colonial Architecture: Wander through narrow cobblestone streets lined with brightly colored houses, baroque churches, and historical monuments.
  • Carnival Celebrations: Olinda’s Carnival is one of the most famous in Brazil, featuring traditional music, giant puppets, and spontaneous street parties.
  • Stunning Views: The town offers breathtaking views of both the city of Recife and the Atlantic coastline from various hilltop vantage points.
  • Vibrant Arts and Culture: Olinda is home to a thriving artistic community, with local galleries, craft shops, and cultural centers that showcase its rich heritage.
  • Churches and Convents: Some of Brazil’s oldest and most beautiful churches, including the Convent of São Francisco and the Church of Sé, can be found in Olinda.

Activities in Olinda

1. Explore the Colonial Architecture

Start your journey by walking through the Alto da Sé, the historic heart of Olinda. Admire the beautiful, pastel-colored colonial houses and ornate churches that have stood the test of time. Don’t miss the Church of São Bento, known for its incredible baroque design and gold-leaf altar.

2. Attend the Famous Olinda Carnival

If you’re lucky enough to visit during Carnival season, you’re in for an unforgettable experience. Unlike the glitzier celebrations of Rio, Olinda’s Carnival is more intimate, with locals and tourists dancing to traditional rhythms like frevo and maracatu. The streets come alive with music, food, and joy, making this a must-see event for party lovers.

3. Discover Local Art

Art lovers will feel right at home in Olinda. Visit Ateliê de Cerâmica Brennand or the Casa do Alceu Valença to see the works of some of the region’s most famous artists. Stroll through the narrow alleys to browse artisan shops selling colorful pottery, handwoven textiles, and sculptures crafted by local artisans.

4. Climb to Alto da Sé

Head to Alto da Sé, the highest point in Olinda, where you’ll be treated to panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the city of Recife in the distance. Visit the local craft market here and sample some delicious local snacks like tapioca and freshly squeezed sugar cane juice.

5. Visit the Convent of São Francisco

Founded in 1585, the Convent of São Francisco is the oldest Franciscan convent in Brazil. Its stunning architecture, including intricate tile work and beautiful cloisters, makes it one of the most visited sites in Olinda. The peaceful atmosphere here offers a welcome break from the lively town.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Olinda largely depends on your preferences:

  • February: For the ultimate experience, visit during Carnival (held in February or March, depending on the year). This is when Olinda is at its liveliest, with nonstop street parties and cultural festivities.
  • June – September: For a quieter, more relaxed experience, visit during the Brazilian winter when temperatures are cooler and there are fewer tourists.
  • November – March: The warmest months, ideal for beachgoers. This period offers sunny days, but be prepared for higher humidity and occasional rainfall.

Getting There

  • By Air: The closest airport is Recife/Guararapes–Gilberto Freyre International Airport, located about 15 kilometers (9 miles) from Olinda. Direct flights are available from major Brazilian cities and international destinations.
  • By Car/Taxi: From Recife, it’s a short 20-30 minute drive to Olinda. Taxis, Uber, or local ride-sharing services are readily available.
  • By Bus: For budget travelers, local buses from Recife run frequently to Olinda’s historic center.

Nearby Attractions

While Olinda offers plenty to explore, there are also several nearby attractions worth visiting:

  • Recife: Just a short drive away, Recife is a bustling city known for its lively nightlife, historic neighborhoods, and beautiful beaches like Boa Viagem.
  • Instituto Ricardo Brennand: This museum in Recife houses an incredible collection of European and Brazilian art, including one of the largest collections of medieval weapons in the world.
  • Porto de Galinhas: One of Brazil’s top beach destinations, Porto de Galinhas is just a two-hour drive from Olinda and offers crystal-clear waters, natural pools, and vibrant marine life.
  • Itamaracá Island: About an hour’s drive north of Olinda, this island is a haven for nature lovers, offering pristine beaches, water sports, and the Fort Orange, a 17th-century Dutch fort.
